Interested in learning how civic institutions interact with their neighborhoods?

Check out today's free daylong event sponsored by the Mid-South District Council of the Urban Land Institute. It starts at 8 a.m. and is open to the public.

ULI Memphis is presenting "Urban Design and Placemaking: A New Model for Growth and Redevelopment around Universities and Other Major Institutions, featuring Tony Brown," at the Fogelman Executive Center at the University of Memphis.

This is the second in a series of workshops exploring how universities and other urban institutions such as medical centers are partnering with neighborhoods.

Brown has served as the president and CEO of the Uptown Consortium in Cincinnati since 2004.

Hall of Fame for Looney

Carson Looney of Looney Ricks Kiss was honored for brilliance in residential design at a gala at the Four Seasons in Washington by BUILDER magazine.

Looney was inducted into the William S. Marvin Hall of Fame, which recognizes leadership and lifetime achievements in the field of residential design.

"This year's inductees represent the best that the residential design field has to offer," said Susan Marvin, president of Marvin Windows and Doors in Minnesota.

The award is named for Marvin's father, founder of the business and a pioneer in residential construction.

More Tactical honors

Tactical Magic, an icon itself when it comes to rebranding, has won more awards for work that's already quite recognizable in these parts.

The agency's billboard for Stroud & Harper, the Southaven law firm we have now come to associate with the banana peel, thanks to the billboard on Interstate 55, won a platinum award from MarComm Creative.

MarComm also gave Tactical a gold award for its design of business cards at sBox Storage, a Memphis company.

Both of these projects have won other design awards.

The agency also received a gold award for pro bono work it did for the Alliance Africa.

In an unrelated competition, Tactical won a silver award for the logo it designed for Lunar Productions.

In both competitions, Tactical was selected from thousands of entries.

Butler Snow expands

Butler Snow Law Firm has expanded to a full floor in the Crescent Center, adding additional conference space and offices for as many as 20 lawyers.

The firm has 40 lawyers in its Memphis office.

"We are particularly excited about the growth opportunities for our health care, intellectual property, and trade practices," said chairman Don Clark.
